An invitation to step into ongoing mission work in Chilinza Village.

In about a month, I’ll be traveling to Malawi, a country in East Africa known as “the warm heart of Africa.” I’m excited to step into a space where work has been happening for years through long-term partnerships, education, community development, and care.

I wanted to take a moment to invite you into an opportunity I’m participating in next month.

This trip is meaningful to me because it connects a lot of things I care deeply about: young people, education, storytelling, service, culture, creativity, and showing up where something meaningful is already being built.

For the past few years, I’ve had the chance to be around the work happening in Malawi from a distance — helping tell the story of what has been unfolding through my church’s long-term partnership there. This year, I finally get to see that work in person.

Using storytelling, design, photography, and presence to help make the unseen seen.

A Thread of Service

This is not my first time stepping into international service, but each trip has carried something different.

In 2017, I had the opportunity to travel to The Gambia, West Africa. There, I rapped a song about electricity and led the sports activities for the STEAM camp. Last year, I went to Grenada with the church I grew up in, Clifton Park Baptist Church, where I helped lead sports games for the AWANA/STEAM camps and a three-day basketball camp alongside my dad and others.

I've been able to pour into young people through sports, encouragement, and presence — while I also captured the landscape, atmosphere, culture, and beauty of The Gambia and Grenada through photography and storytelling.

This year, that thread continues in Malawi.

(Along with the fact that in 2017, I returned home from The Gambia the weekend Spider-Man: Homecoming debuted. This year, I’ll be returning from Malawi the weekend Spider-Man: Brand New Day debuts! Apparently, I love going to Africa when a new Spider-Man movie comes out.) LOL

Basketball Camp & Supplies

One thing I may have the opportunity to do while in Malawi is help lead a basketball camp/class for kids and young people in Chilinza.

This feels like a continuation of a thread that has shown up in different parts of my life and service. In 2017, while in The Gambia, I helped organize and lead the sports section of games and activities. Last year in Grenada, I helped lead a basketball camp alongside my dad and others. This year, I may get to continue that through basketball in Malawi.

Basketball has always been a huge part of my life and continues to show up in relationships/connecting across so many different spaces.

As part of this trip, I would love to bring outdoor basketballs, replacement nets, and camp/class supplies. If possible, I would also love to bring personalized basketballs connected to this opportunity.

These supplies would support what we do while we are there and, hopefully, leave something useful behind for continued play, connection, and joy.

WHY MALAWI?

For the past 10 years, Mosaic has been connected to Chilinza Village, investing in education, community development, and long-term partnership.

One of the major projects has been the building of a primary school, which opened in 2023 and created a space for children and adults alike to learn, grow, and dream in a more stable environment.

This trip is not about starting from scratch. It is about stepping into what has already been planted, built, and carried forward by local leaders, families, teachers, students, and partners over time.

THE WORK WE'RE STEPPING INTO

In Chilinza, students were already showing up to learn. Teachers were already serving. Families already believed in the power of education. But for many students, the barriers were still real: overcrowded classrooms, limited resources, and learning environments that did not yet match the commitment already present in the community.

Through long-term partnership, that story has continued to grow — with a school, community resources, a basketball court, and ongoing support for education, development, and stability.

This year, our team gets to come alongside the work that is already happening and support the continued needs of the community.

Why I’m Going

For me, this trip is not just about traveling somewhere new. It is about coming alongside work that already matters deeply.

I have spent the past few years using my creative gifts to help tell the story of what has been happening in Malawi from afar. Now, I get to step into that story in person — to serve, learn, listen, support, and continue using storytelling, design, photography, and presence to help make the unseen seen.

I’m excited to see the school, meet the people connected to this work, support the team, and witness what has been built through years of relationship and partnership.

And yes, I’m absolutely excited to visit the basketball court and hopefully get a few shots up too.
